LeadingAge Act for Older Adults: Support for Workforce Provisions Continues

LeadingAge continues to push the Act for Older Adults action campaign, framed by our 5 essential actions to allow our nation’s older adult services to address the COVID-19 crisis head on. These essential actions form the basis of our request to Congress for the next COVID-19 relief package.

Late July 27, Senate Republicans unveiled their COVID relief package. LeadingAge is currently reviewing the proposals. The package includes a reemployment bonus, and a retention bonus aimed at keeping workers on the payroll.

Key among our requests have been ensuring pandemic hero pay, paid sick leave, and health care coverage to recognize the frontline workers who are risking their own lives serving older people during this crisis.

Legislation already has passed the House, the Health and Economic Recovery Omnibus Emergency Solutions (HEROES) Act, which includes the following:

  • Pandemic hazard pay for essential workers: $13 dollars per hour premium on top of normal wages, up to a cap of $10,000. The cap is $5,000 for essential workers earning more than $200K.
  • Paid and family leave provisions that allow all employees to take leave while caring for adult family members (caring for children is already allowed).
  • Temporary easing of certain immigration-related restrictions to allow immigrant health care workers to assist in the fight against COVID-19.

LeadingAge continues to support the remaining 5 essential actions, including immediate access to ample and appropriate PPE for all providers who serve older Americans; on-demand and fully-funded access to accurate and rapid-results testing, and support for aging services providers across the continuum of care.
