CDC Adds Point-of-Care Testing Data Pathway to NHSN COVID-19 Module

CDC has added a new data pathway to the NHSN COVID-19 module that will allow providers to report point-of-care testing.

Beginning October 16, nursing homes may report data on COVID-19 testing through the National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) system. NHSN has added a new data pathway that will allow providers to report data on point-of-care testing conducted in the nursing home. The new data elements align with those required under the HHS Lab Data Reporting Requirements updated on June 4, 2020. CDC will host webinars on this pathway on October 22 and October 23. Providers can register for these webinars on the NHSN COVID-19 module site under “Training”.

It is important to note that providers who choose to report point-of-care testing data will not be relieved of the requirement to report this data through the process outlined by the state. While this new data pathway has the ability to satisfy requirements, the state must choose to adopt the NHSN pathway as its official reporting process.

Providers must also have Level 3 Secure Access Management Service (SAMS) access within NHSN in order to report through this pathway. CDC has been inviting users to upgrade to Level 3 via email over the past several weeks. Providers may also self-initiate this upgrade by emailing nhsn@cdc.gov with the subject line “Enhancing Data Security”. More information can be found on the NHSN COVID-19 module site under “Enhancing Data Security”.

For more information on point-of-care testing, providers may refer to this updated guidance from CDC that includes information on types of point-of-care tests, specimen collection, and reporting requirements.
