FCC Accepting Comments on Increased Spending for Rural Telehealth

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) may lift its $400 million annual spending limit on the Rural Health Care (RHC) Program, which improves connectivity for rural health care providers to enable better care. Comments are due by Feb. 2, 2018. LeadingAge and CAST are supportive of this increase and are continuing to advocate to expand the program’s eligibility to rural home health care providers.

Protect Yourself from Spectre and Meltdown

Not sure how to protect yourself against the newly announced Spectre and Meltdown chip vulnerabilities?  We have answers. IT: The Answer to Hospital Readmissions

Please check out a recent article in McKnight's Long-Term Care News, "An IT game changer," that discusses how technologies can prevent hospital readmissions. In the article, I note that hospitals, ACOs and payers like managed care plans are using data to identify top performers and contract with them or include them in their ever-narrowing referral networks.

It quotes me as saying, “Providers need to know their readmission rates and identify where they need to improve. To achieve this, they need data analytics tools [in EMRs, or as add-ons] to help them slice and dice that data by location, diagnosis, conditions, care plan, and understand the root causes of higher readmission rates.”

I also suggest that providers match tools as closely as possible to their patient population. For example, a home health agency serving individuals with chronic conditions and high hospitalization and readmission rates might want to consider a telehealth or remote patient monitoring solution.

LeadingAge Gold Partner with CAST Focus PointClickCare and LeadingAge CAST Supporter Netsmart also contributed to the article.

Tech Trends for the New Year

A new white paper from CAST Business Associate CDW Healthcare and Senior Housing News predicts the top five technologies to change senior living in 2018: wearables, the Internet of Things (IoT), telemedicine, voice activation, and security. A follow-up article identified three benefits of integration and shared my thoughts on them.
