Medical Marijuana: What You Need to Know

Legislation | February 08, 2019 | by Cory Kallheim

Use of marijuana for medical purposes is now legal in 33 states and the District of Columbia. The landscape is changing rapidly as more states explore medical marijuana. Our frequently asked questions, updated in February 2019, should help providers as they wrestle with medical marijuana today and moving forward.

In answer to questions frequently raised by our members, LeadingAge has developed guidance to help senior living providers explore the issues surrounding the expanding area of medical marijuana:

  • What states allow medical marijuana?
  • What are the similarities of the various state medical marijuana laws?
  • How do state laws interface with federal laws and policies on marijuana use?
  • Do providers have to allow medical marijuana in their communities?

We hope this document, which was updated in February 2019, will be helpful to aging services providers navigating the varying restrictions and requirements under federal and state law.
