Not-for-profit providers’ fidelity to their roots and missions requires that they fulfill their obligations of service to their surrounding communities. 

This is especially true today, when governments are scrutinizing the degree to which not-for-profits provide benefits to their communities.

It falls upon leaders—top managers and boards—to inspire a dedication to social accountability throughout their organizations. As "passionate champions" of their missions, leaders are using a variety of strategies.
