April 30: Nominate a DON or ADON for the 2017 McHugh Leadership Award

This year’s McHugh Award will recognize a director of nursing (DON) or assistant director of nursing (ADON) who creates a supportive and engaged workplace environment by displaying excellent leadership skills while managing nursing and frontline staff.

 

April 30 is the deadline for the 2017 Joan Anne McHugh Award for Leadership in Long-Term Services and Supports (LTSS) Nursing.

This year’s award will recognize a director of nursing (DON) or assistant director of nursing (ADON) who creates a supportive and engaged workplace environment by displaying excellent leadership skills while managing nursing and frontline staff.

The McHugh winner will be awarded $1,000 to be used for professional development. He or she will also receive free airfare, lodging, and registration for the LeadingAge Annual Meeting and Expo, which takes place Oct. 29-Nov. 1 in New Orleans.

Nominate a DON or ADON for the McHugh Award by completing an online application.

What are the Award Criteria?

The McHugh Award recipient will be a DON or ADON who:

  • Demonstrates creative and innovative approaches to leadership in LTSS nursing.
  • Values and respects all levels of professional caregivers, and models and promotes this attitude among peers.
  • Facilitates meaningful collaboration among interdisciplinary team members.
  • Creates or implements practices at the organization to improve the workplace environment and support nursing and frontline staff.
  • Is instrumental in improving the recruitment and retention of the nursing and frontline staff.
  • Assists caregivers in understanding their relationship to the organization’s mission and goals.

What is the Nomination Process?

LeadingAge members can nominate a DON or ADON for the McHugh Award by completing an online application.

Nominating organizations will be asked to submit:

  • A description of nominee, including his or her job scope, roles, and responsibilities.
  • A letter from the nominator describing how the nominee meets the award’s selection criteria.
  • Two letters of recommendation—from a nursing peer and a nursing assistant/direct care worker—describing why the nominee deserves to be recognized with the McHugh Award.
  • A letter from the nominee explaining his or her professional development goals and how the McHugh Award’s $1,000 prize might be used to meet those goals.
