On Aug. 31, Elizabeth Warren, a candidate for the U.S. Senate, visited Orchard Cove, a retirement and assisted living community in Canton, MA. Warren spoke to a ballroom filled to capacity with residents, employees and members of the community.

A blog written by Orchard Cove resident Letty Zander explains why the community wanted to hear from Elizabeth Warren:

We are a group of retired seniors who have a lively interest in the functioning of our government. Because we want to be educated voters, we invited candidate Warren to share her views on many issues of great importance to the members of our community: maintaining a bipartisan balance of power in Washington, D.C; ending unrestricted campaign financing; tax fairness; consumer advocacy including student loans; a woman’s right to contraception as well as equal pay for equal work; and mortgage debt relief.

Most importantly to us at Orchard Cove, she supported President Obama’s health care bill so millions of uninsured in our country will be eligible for medical insurance.

According to Ruth Stark, corporate director of CCRC marketing for Hebrew Senior Life, Orchard Cove is an incredibly politically active community. In fact, says Stark, the residents created a Social Awareness Group, which organizes events to help residents and members of the Canton community better understand issues and to encourage voting.

"This is what Orchard Cove is all about," Stark said. "Intelligent people, actively engaging the Orchard Cove community as well as the larger surrounding community."
