On Friday, July 27, Jewish Home Lifecare's Bronx Division celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Independence of Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago. Many of the nursing home staff members hail from these island nations.
The 3-hour event was entirely a staff initiative and featured traditional food, music, dancing, drumming and folk songs from the islands performed by staff members of Jamaican and Trinidadian and Tobagan heritage. Staff dressed in traditional costumes and shared displays of island culture and history. Tray after tray of island food specialties were donated by local restaurants as well as prepared by the staff.
A key event organizer, Assistant Director of Nursing Dorian Samuels, R.N. said, "We felt that even though we can’t all travel to Jamaica, it was pertinent for us to celebrate like we were back in Jamaica!”
Special guests at the event included Jamaican Consul General Herman LaMont and Deputy Bronx Boro President Aurelia Green, and the event was broadcast on News 12 Bronx.
