Health Affairs Article Examines Challenges Faced By Older Adults

Health Affairs: June 2012

The June 2012 issue of Health Affairs includes Unintended Consequences Of Steps To Cut Readmissions And Reform Payment May Threaten Care Of Vulnerable Older Adults, an article that is a must read in terms of the challenges that older adults face and how our members must position themselves as leaders to address them.

Here are 3 reasons why I think the article is an important read:

  1. It is an important baseline, well-researched piece on the state of affairs regarding the importance of “transitions” management and the role of long-term services and supports in the health spectrum. We can all be guided by it in terms of progress that needs to be made in this important arena.

  2. It is the work leaders of the Long Term Quality Alliance (LTQA), of which LeadingAge is a founding member.

  3. The U.S. Supreme Court decision is looming like a cat hovering over a mouse hole. We don't know what its decision will be. However, when it is announced, the bottom is this: We have a responsibility to address these kinds of major issues that seniors face and that tax payers are paying for.
The Supreme Court will shape how we approach these problems, but it will not dampen or deter the clear and present need to solve them through creative means either already at our disposal OR as a result of the creative/entrepreneurial work of our members.
