Residents learn about the services available in VA

Greenspring retirement community in Springfield, VA, recently hosted its first fraud prevention expo.

The expo was held to educate residents and the families of residents about how seniors can protect themselves from fraud and exploitation, as well as to address what systems and services are in place to protect residents at Greenspring.

In opening remarks, Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli encouraged residents to use the many services the state has in place to protect seniors and their assets.

A simple rule to follow is to never provide personal information when you are being contacted; personal information should only be provided when you are initiating contact with your bank, financial institution, etc.

Following the attorney general’s remarks, a documentary starring Hollywood icon Mickey Rooney entitled, "Last Will and Embezzlement," was shown for the first time following its New York City premiere in April 2012.

The New York Times has called the documentary “eye-opening” and The Huffington Post has said it should be “required viewing.”

The documentary’s writer and producer, Pamela Glasner, was available at the Greenspring expo to answer questions and talk with residents.

The expo also featured numerous vendors, including AARP; federal, state and county consumer protection and crime prevention agencies; financial institutions and other businesses; and Greenspring’s own social work and security departments.
