Foulkeways at Gwynedd’s skilled nursing care facility, Gwynedd House, has been chosen by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), Center for Clinical Standards and Quality (CCSQ) as 1 of only 10 nursing homes nationwide (out of 16,000) to participate in a "Best Practices Review of High Performing Nursing Homes."

Foulkeways was identified as a ‘High Performing Nursing Home’ using available national data such as the CMS’s 5-Star Quality Rating System as well as recommendations from the Pennsylvania State Department of Health based on the recent awarding of their newly created Excellence in Health Care Compliance Award

The purpose of the review is to prepare for the launch of a National Quality Improvement Collaborative. The collaborative will be led by CMS and Quality Improvement Organizations (QIO) across the country. Ultimately, the collaborative's goals are to:

  • Establish quality improvement practices.
  • Solidify supporting practices of nursing homes, including general business applications, staffing, and quality of life indicators.
  • Improve overall systems of care delivered by nursing homes across the nation.
  • Focus specifically on preventable healthcare "acquired" conditions such as alls, pressure ulcers, urinary tract infections and the inappropriate use of antipsychotic medications for those with dementia.

In a letter to Foulkeways director of health services, Mary Knapp, QIO’s Nursing Home Lead Rebecca Kilman says, “We are contacting you to request your assistance in better understanding what your organization is doing to generate your extraordinary results. While we recognize that there are a variety of factors that contribute to a nursing home’s success, we seek to identify and rapidly replicate best practices associated with high performing nursing home.”
