On June 18, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) issued New Housing Resources to Support Olmstead Implementation, an informational bulletin on recent U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) actions, policies, and resources that are available to states as they continue to develop long-term service and support systems that are compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the Olmstead decision.
State policy makers have learned that in order to successfully implement the Olmstead decision they need to establish and maintain strong relationships with the housing community and maximize housing opportunities available through HUD and State housing finance agencies.
The bulletin notes that many states have had success in using Money Follows the Person administrative funding in order to improve the utilization of housing resources in a state.
HUD and CMS continue to work together on further Olmstead-related initiatives.
They will build on their collaborative efforts to connect housing resources and home and community-based services at the state and local level to continue to generate sustainable, accessible housing with services to best serve people with disabilities.
