How CMS Has Changed the Nursing Home and Hospital Compare Websites

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has announced updates to the Nursing Home and Hospital Compare websites, effective July 19, 2012. 

Both sites are intended to assist consumers in making informed choices in seeking care and services and include: 

  • Updates to glossaries and web resources.
  • A redesign to make navigation easier by users.
  • The addition of new comparison tools. 
On both websites, navigation has been improved to provide maps for more specific location of facilities.  

Nursing Home Compare

Updates to Nursing Home Compare include:

  • Narratives that detail specific findings from inspections of nursing home facilities.
  • Two new measures that report the nursing home's use of antipsychotic medications.
  • Updated data for quality measures now based on MDS 3.0.
  • Information on nursing home ownership including the names of individuals and organizations with ownership or managerial control.  

Hospital Compare

Additions to Hospital Compare include:

  • 2 new measures that cover potential health risks of imaging services, such as exposure to unnecessary radiation.
  • Updated data for existing quality measures.
