Planning Now for Life Ahead

Caring for a loved one living with dementia presents a unique set of challenges. Washington, DC's Iona Senior Services developed a comprehensive preparation guide for caregivers and their loved ones. The planning guide will help caregivers identify and work through some of the important choices they will face. It provides information that will help all concerned contribute to sound, practical decisions that will enable life to be lived to its fullest.

The guide, created in partnership with the The Greater Washington Partnership for Palliative and End-of-Life Care and the Alzheimer's Association's National Capital Chapter, addresses several topics faced in this kind of caregiving situation, including:

  • Managing legal and financial issues
  • Adapting activities
  • Developing a support network
  • Addressing end-of-life care.

There is also a listing of resources and organizations that can help caregivers and sample forms and checklist that can be used to help a caregiver stay organized and ensure his or her loved one is maintaining as much dignity and independence as possible.
