The impasse that shuttered
most of the federal government and came close to officially reaching the limits
on the authority of the government to borrow to pay for on-going debts came to
an end on October 16, literally at the 11th hour. Both houses of
Congress passed, by comfortable bi-partisan margins, a deal negotiated by Sen.
Harry Reid (D-NV) and Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY). The legislation was then
signed by President Obama, and went into effect immediately. We greatly
appreciate the hundreds of calls and messages LeadingAge members sent to their
legislators urging an end to the shutdown.
